The 626 Fish and Chipper

www.the626.ca

The 626 Fish and Chipper started as a local food truck in Masset, a small community at the northern end of Haida Gwaii, known for its year-round seafood. With a commitment to local fare and flair, they quickly expanded their menu and established a sit-down restaurant/gallery with an expansive deck. This provided a valuable dining option in a community with limited choices, particularly during the busy summer season.

As lifelong residents, the owners deeply valued their location and community, evident in their use of a local phone number in the business name. Starting with the food truck allowed them to source fresh local seafood, laying the foundation for their success. Acquiring a building for a permanent dining space enabled them to showcase their collection of Haida Art, celebrating the region’s rich First Nations heritage.

The addition of a large outdoor deck created a gathering space where customers could enjoy the sea breeze from nearby Masset Inlet. The 626 Fish and Chipper also actively embraced food and beverage trends, offering handmade sourdough pizza, various flavors of Italian soda, abundant choices of ice cream and milkshakes, sustainably sourced coffee, and Bubble Tea.

Not only did the restaurant cater to regular customers with an early 7am opening time, serving breakfast and coffee, but they are also prepared to accommodate larger crowds during events like the recent memorial pole raising for Carl Hart. The 626 Fish and Chipper is a hub for the community, providing delicious food and a welcoming atmosphere for locals and visitors alike.
