According to artist Wayne Wilson, the Haida Gwaii islands have a special mysticism and magic about them. That magic makes the islands the perfect location to find inspiration if you happen to be an artist. Wayne was born and raised here and proclaims that there is no place else on earth that he would rather live or work. “It’s home,” says Wayne. “I love my life here. It’s perfect!”
Wayne has been refining his carving skills for more than four decades. He developed an interest in metal carving early in life and did an apprenticeship under notable Haida carver Gordon Cross. He has since become a recognized aboriginal artist in BC. His popular images of ravens, eagles, the sun and moon; and other natural subjects have become sought-after pieces. Most of these pieces are wearable art in the form of jewellery.
Wayne feels a deep affinity for nature, particularly the water. The ocean is a creative muse for him, and one of his favourite things to do is to get out on the water. Wayne has a generous heart and also spends a great deal of time volunteering within the community.

Dave’s Custom Carvings
Haida artist Dave Hunter tells stories and legends of his Haida ancestry through his original paintings, silver and argillite carvings. Dave is largely self-taught, learning the art of carving first with wood and then moving on to other mediums. Today is he is most renowned for his silver jewellery, which often depicts animals and mythical creatures. Dave is also responsible for the creation of numerous original paintings which have been made into art cards, post cards and limited edition prints. Dave is active within the Haida community as well as the artists’ community on Haida Gwaii. He was the founder of the Haida Raven Gallery in Masset, a gallery dedicated to promoting the works of Haida artists. Dave’s work has been exhibited and sold in various galleries and venues throughout Haida Gwaii and beyond for more than three decades. Dave is available for custom and commission work.
