Meet Marla Abbott!
All of the signs seemed to be pointing in the direction of small business ownership for Marla Abbott. She had dreamed of owning her own business, and when she bought a house in Daajing Giids with a room that was perfect for a store, it sealed her destiny. She started Seaside Gifts in 2000 and has been enjoying the perks of being her own boss ever since.
Of course, business ownership is challenging and there’s lots of hard work involved. But it also comes with benefits, like the freedom to set her own hours. She’s even able to sneak away for a hike or a walk on the new sea walk now and then. She also appreciates being able to sew or work outside in her garden between customers.
Marla loves the lifestyle available on Haida Gwaii, especially the gorgeous natural scenery and wildlife. Marla spends as much time as she can exploring the outdoors in and around Daajing Giids. Plus, the people who live here are friendly, open and quick to support their neighbours, both in everyday life and in their business efforts. Marla is grateful for how the island communities work together to improve the quality of living here and to support local businesses like hers.
